Cathy Layzell is a landscape and still life painter working in oil on canvas and within the 'colourist' tradition. She often paints “alla prima”, a technique rooted in Impressionism whereby the canvases retain a freshness that speaks of an an obvious pleasure in the sheer sensuality of paint. Her work has been described as “gentle and with insight and a controlled sensitivity reminiscent of the beautiful quiet of Morandi”.

Favourite subjects are the magic shifting flow of light over land and sea, vases and bowls, flowers and trees; scenes from her everyday life and travels.

"A flower, a leaf ... A glistening, shimmering stone, everything is glazed, varnished, you cannot imagine how beautiful it is ... the more we look at things the less we see them." (Raymond Escholier, Matisse ce vivant, 1956)
