Education Born in 1972, Cathy Layzell completed her BA Fine Art Degree at Rhodes University in 1994, majoring in Painting and English Literature.Experience Cathy moved to London in 1995 where she retrained in book design. At the end of 2001 she moved to the remote North Norfolk coast where she began painting full-time.In the summer of 2003 Cathy was an ‘invited resident artist’ at the Painting School of Montmirail in SW France (near Toulouse) where she studied under the guidance of Francis Pratt the European colourist tradition (Bonnard, Cezanne and Matisse). She returned to this part of France for the summers of 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. In 2006, Cathy left Norfolk and travelled to Australia. She took a studio in Melbourne and was introduced to printmaking by Jeffrey Makin of Port Jackson Press. On returning to the UK, she moved to London and worked from the Cable Street studios in Docklands. In 2008, Cathy attended a workshop at Matisse's former home and studio ‘Villa La Reve’, Vence, France with the British abstract artist Gary Wragg. Cathy returned to South Africa in 2008, and currently lives and works in Kalk Bay, Cape Town.
