Cathy Layzell is a landscape and still life painter working in oil on canvas. She creates calm, subtle, wistfully abstracted, painterly canvases that vibrate with a soft, dreamy light.
For 6 years Cathy lived in the bleak and unique landscape of North Norfolk where her poetic memory of the magic shifting flow of light over land and sea left a profound mark on her visual imagination. Here she found her artistic voice which bears an affinity with the English colourist and romantic landscape traditions.
Cathy's work has been described as “gentle and with insight and a controlled sensitivity reminiscent of the beautiful quiet of Morandi”.
"A flower, a leaf ... A glistening, shimmering stone, everything is glazed, varnished, you cannot imagine how beautiful it is ... the more we look at things the less we see them." (Raymond Escholier, Matisse ce vivant, 1956)
